Shiner - Schadenfreude LP - Black Vinyl & Gray Swirl Vinyl

Untitled

Two Black Eyes (2020)

When there's nineteen years between a band's most recent two releases, there is always cause for concern.  Will they be able to pick up somewhere close to where they left off? Is it even possible to capture that sort of lightning in a bottle a second time?  Will anyone even care?  Luckily, when it comes to the new album from Shiner, they tick off all of the boxes and answer any questions with a resounding yes.

I became aware of Shiner primarily because they are my wife's favorite band.  She played them for me and I especially gravitated towards their 2001 album, The Egg.  Coincidently, that was the last album they put our before the nineteen year gap that preceded Schadenfreude.  Listening to Schadenfreude, I think it is a great follow up to The Egg.

While Allen Epley has stayed active over the years in his other band The Life and Times, they never spoke to me the same way Shiner did.  Though my wife thinks they are great, for me they were just never loud enough.  If there's one thing that Schadenfreude is, it's loud.  It has those huge, crunchy guitar tones and massive energy that I want out of this kind of Jawbox-flavored rock and roll.

Now, when I say energy, I want to clarify that a bit.  Shine is not playing fast punk rock songs.  Their vibe is slower, but it still packs a mean punch.  I tend to visualize molten lava flowing down a mountain.  It's not going to fly through a town, but it's got an unstoppable inertia to it, churning and building as it wipes out everything in front of it.  It's a big sound and one that I am happy to hear again.

When Shiner started playing some reunion shows and rereleasing their earlier records, there was always hope that new tunes might come to light.  With Schadenfreude that hope became reality and fortunately Shine was also able to live up to the reputation they created for themselves twenty plus years ago.

Shiner - The Egg LP - Green Vinyl (/150)

Untitled

BCore (2018, Reissue)

This is the second time that The Egg has been reissued and is also the second time I've written about it here on this site. You may (or may not) remember that Shiner is my wife's favorite band.  I dig them too, but the only reason I know about them is because of her.  While my wife isn't really a record collector, we've decided that it is important to have all of the Shiner records in the collection.  We're up for some variants as well.

This variant came out in Spain on BCore discs.  The music is the same as the US version, featuring sprawling, but surprisingly catchy rock that is similar in scope to what Jawbox is known for.  BCore decided the change things up with the artwork, opting for greens where there used to be oranges.  I think it looks good, though it is somewhat jarring having seen everything in orange for so long.  Still, I always say that I'm in favor of substantial artwork changes when something gets rereleased.  I like being able to tell it apart from the original.

In addition to the artwork change, 150 copies were also pressed on green vinyl.  Shiner sold a handful of them directly here in the US, but they sold out in a blink of an eye with no real warning that they had gone up on sale.  Luckily, BCore still had copies available, so we imported this one from Spain.  It wasn't the first time and certainly won't be the last time I pay some extra postage for a variant. Records like this need to be in the collection.

Shiner - Starless LP - White & Blue Vinyl (/1000)

Untitled

Self Released (2015, Reissue)

Thirteen years ago today, my wife and I started dating.  Though I supposed it is possible I might have ended up stumbling across Shiner on my own, it's probably safe to say that the only reason I know about these guys are because they are my wife's favorite.  It's a good thing too as it would be pretty annoying to have missed out on such a great band.

I will admit that I have not delved deeply into the band's entire catalog.  I am mostly jumping in to each record as they get released on vinyl for the first time.  I have spent many, many years with the Shiner album The Egg, so that is the main point of comparison I can use for Starless.

In many ways, Starless could be considered the superior album, at least from my point of view.  I think that the songs are a little poppier in general.  The pace is also a littler faster across the board.   Both of these traits are the kinds of things I look for in a great album.  There's not a bad song on the record and the way the band blends their deep guitar growl with melodic vocals floating over top is a trait kind of unique to them.

A lot of people compare Shiner to bands like Jawbox, and I certainly see that as a good starting point.  Jawbox tends to sound a bit angrier than Shiner and I feel that Shiner is the kind of band that will take a few more chances with their songs.  This leads to some interesting experimentation, but not going overboard to where this sounds like experimental music.  This is rock, make no bones about it.

At the end of the day, I probably like The Egg a bit more.  That has a lot to do with how much longer I've been listening to that album and some pretty fond memories attached to it.  Starless is just as strong of a record and as I said earlier, even exceeds The Egg at times.  Shiner is a sorely overlooked band that absolutely deserves more attention.  I can only thank my wife for having such excellent taste in music and showing me the way.

Shiner - The Egg LP - White & Orange Split Vinyl (/100), Orange Vinyl(/200) & Black Vinyl (/700)

Son Of Man NYC (2012)

Shiner was a band that, quite frankly, I didn't know anything about until I met my wife. When we first met 9 years ago she had told me her favorite band was Shiner. I don't think I'd ever even heard of them to be honest. She insisted that I listen to the Egg. Now, since we had just started dating, I was going to be polite regardless of what she gave me, but from the first few seconds of The Truth About Cows, I was shocked. Here was a band with huge, thick guitars, a melodic, but powerful energy and strong vocals that I wasn't totally prepared for. To say I was impressed would be an understatement. I genuinely liked these guys.

Fast forward 9 years. We're married, Shiner has been broken up for ages, my copy of the Egg on CD has gone missing, but Shiner steps up to the plate and announces a handful of reunion shows and the Egg on vinyl with 3 limited variants! We were in line before the venue doors even opened. We were standing at the merch booth before everything was even unpacked. There was no way we were not going to get all 3 versions of this record. I helped the merch guy (who I think was a venue guy not someone the band had brought along) find all 3 versions and we were set.

Let's be clear, these are my wife's records, but I'm happy to take pictures, tell a little story about them and add them too the family collection. The vinyl came out great, the 2 colored versions are just beautiful to look out and I'm always impressed when a band is able to match cover art and vinyl colors so close. This is a record we're thrilled to have in the house and now I don't even mind that my CD went missing.
