For Hurricane Sandy: Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain LP

Hurricane Sandy is barreling down towards us and they closed down my work for the day. I thought it would be appropriate to break my usual rule about only posting newly bought records in order to take a picture of a record that fits the spirit of the day. Honestly, I'm surprised how few records I own that mention storms or weather, there were not plentiful options here.
Anyway, this is the 180g reissue of Crooked Rain, Crooked rain that came out a few years ago. I had the original version of the LP, but I actually traded it to someone back in the early 2000s. I don't remember what I traded it for, other than I knew if would be way easier to replace that Pavement record than it would have been to find the record that I traded for. When the reissue came out, I opted to grab it, though I probably will try to hunt down another copy of the original pressing at some point.
While my favorite Pavement album is Wowee Zowee, Crooked Rain is an ultra close #2. Pavement really define that poppy, wacky indie rock of the 90s that I just love so much. While I never saw them play a good show (and I gave them ample chances to do so, but always left disappointed), few bands can touch Pavement on record. If you don't have this record in your collection, that is a problem you should fix right away.

The Ballantynes - The Message 7"
La-Ti-Da (2011)
After I heard the more recent Ballantynes 7" that I posted about last week, I knew I had to get their debut 7" right away, especially as it looked like it was out of print. It actually wasn't all that hard to find a copy at a distro so I grabbed it. I'm not sure I like it quite as much as the new 7", but it is still pretty fantastic. As a longtime follower of The Blues Brothers, I've always had a fascination with 60's rhythm & blues and it sure seams like The Ballantynes do too (though I can't comment on their level of respect for The Blues Brothers).
I really hope they have a full length in the works, as I would love to hear more from these guys. If I'm recommending, you should start with the Misery 7" of theirs, but the B-side on the Message 7", in particular, is a hell of a song.

Deep Pockets - Knitting Circle 7"
Art Of The Underground (2012)
Another single from the great Art of The Underground 7" Series, this one from a band call Deep Pockets. I'd never heard of them prior to this 7", but they deal in a currency I appreciate; Noisy 90s influenced indie rock. "Knitting Circle" is a pretty good song, chugging along with a good chorus and some chunky guitar riffs, but unfortunately the band ruins it with a totally unnecessary breakdown toward the end that literally starts with the lyrics "Here's the serious part of the song." I then falls into a spoken word mess. The B-side is a Silkworm cover, "Wet Firecracker." Though it mostly makes me think I really need to go back and check out Silkworm again, because this song rules.
There some hits and some misses with the Art Of The Underground series, this one being kind of in the middle, but whenever I see a package from them in the mail, I'm always very glad I'm a subscriber.

Nuisance - Humboldt County 7"

Typically, If I am buying a record from someone off of Discogs, I will often go through the rest of their list, just to browse and perhaps save some shipping costs by adding to the order. That was the case with this 7". I snagged it from the same guy that I bought the vacant Lot LP from a few weeks back. I enjoyed the 1 Nuisance LP that I picked up a while back and figured adding a 7" was the right thing to do. It's pretty similar to the LP, maybe a bit rougher, but definitely in line to what I was expecting. Wouldn't have gone crazy hunting it down, but absolutely worth the pick up since it was just begging to be bought. Couldn't find any of these songs streaming online. Sorry.

Another Trouble In Mind 7" and this one I like a lot more than the Jacco Gardner one I wrote about a few days ago. Woolen Kits play basic, fuzzed out pop songs. They're not trying to reinvent the wheel, they're just picking up their instruments and cranking out good catchy tunes. Olivelawn - sap LP

O from fluf was in Olivelawn before he was in fluf. I was listening to fluf a few weeks ago and thought to myself, I wonder if Olivelawn is better than I remember them being. it's been years and years since I had given them a try. Like an idiot, I couldn't quell my curiosity by listening to the one Olivelawn record i already have, I had to go and buy their first full length. After all, it's a record I didn't have.
All these years later, I still don't really like Olivelawn all that much, though probably more than I did when younger. I think it's the vocals that put me off on a few songs. In some instances (like the song Roses) they're great, but in other songs they're a little too screamy-scratchy-hardcore-ish for me. Music is pretty good though, I may have a completely different opinion of the band if O was singing instead of just playing guitar. I do feel like this record deserves a place in my collection though, as I really am all about documenting as much of the early 90's San Diego scene as possible.

Out On A Limb - Drowned LP - Red Vinyl (/100)

Out On A Limb hail from Germany and released this 8 song LP last year. Didn't really hear anything about them until this year though, The band plays the sort of downstroke plenty rock that you can hear hints of the Wipers in. As far as current bands go, I would definitely count them as brethren of the Estranged, though a bit more subdued.
The band tends to go for a more mid tempo approach to their music as opposed to a pedal to the metal in your face assault that other Wipers influenced bands like Hot Snakes dish out. It's a very good record, not great, but absolutely worth picking up if you see it at a distro you are already picking something else up from.

Jacco Gardner - Where Will You Go 7"

I'm not certain if there is an actual buzz out there for Jacco Gardner or if I just hear about him a lot because I follow Trouble In Mind on twitter. Regardless, I feel like his name is out there quite a bit for a fellow with only two 7"s to his name. When phrases like "baroque" and "chamber pop" are being used to describe music, I immediately assume I can just replace those phrases with "pretentious garbage." While that is not the case with Jacco Gardner (I don't find him pretentious at all), this is a record that's absolutely not for me.
I guess I just don't like psych. The music or the TV show. There's just something about the swirling, underwater sounding, hippie vocals that just rubs me the wrong way. I think the music on this record is OK, but the vocals just kill it for me. Not a fan. I am happy to buy the record and keep my complete collection of Trouble In Mind 7"s going strong, but I'm going to pass on his upcoming full length.

Tulsa - Sour Digs LP

This is another record I've been trying to find for a while. I first heard of the band from the label Sandwich Man records. For the longest time they had been listing a Potential Johns/Tulsa split 7" as coming soon. The record never saw the light of day, but it made me curious about the band. I picked up a Tulsa split 7". I liked it, but honestly it didn't really make a lasting impact. Fast forward to now, I finally managed to find a copy, and while not disappointed in the record, i guess I'm just not as in love with it as I would like to be considering how long I was trying to find a copy.
Tulsa play sloppy, ramshackle pop punk. I don't want sloppy to be taken as a completely negative description here. It's very obvious the band has a ton of energy and the passion they put into their music really comes through. I prefer a band that goes with reckless abandon as opposed to one that's overly concerned with making everything perfect. Where the record falls a little short for me is that when I'm done listening to it, I can't remember anything I just heard. The songs are so short that I feel like they never really have time to truly craft that memorable hook.
I like the throwback sound, I love the energy; I just wish Tulsa took their time a bit more and allowed themselves to really take their songs that one step further. Why are punks always in such a hurry?

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - A Reverse Willie Horton LP

With the new Blues Explosion album out, I've also been going back to some of their older releases to see how they stand up. Some hold up pretty well, others, not so much. During this time, my buddy @swamipat started posting on twitter about his copy of A Reverse Willie Horton. Frankly, record collectors are a jealous bunch and when he started talking about this record again, I decided I needed to get it in the collection. I had been on the hunt for A Reverse Willie Horton back in the 90's, but the expensive price tag always kept it on the "next time" list.
Well, times have changed in 2012, and I was able to grab a copy off Discogs for $36. Compared to the prices this thing went for in the 90's, SOLD. Musically, this was never my favorite Blues Explosion release, as I have had the vast majority of the songs from the S/T LP and Japanese Crypt Style CD. The songs are all rough, loud and crazy and while I do appreciate the energy, I have always been partial to the band's more polished work.
It's still a mighty fine record to have in the collection though, especially since it completes a long abandoned quest.

This, for me, was kind of a bonus record when I ordered the La-Ti-Da pack of five 7"s so I could get the limited versions of the Tranzmitors & Needles//Pins records. I had never heard of this band before, so I went in not really expecting anything. Pretty darn impressed when all is said and done.
The Ballantynes play a total 60s soul throwback. Complete with female backing vocals and the sort of swagger you haven't seen in music for a few decades. This is a band I'm going to keep an eye one and I already found an online shop that was still carrying their out of print first 7", so that's been ordered as well.

When I heard that The Soft Pack had a new full length coming out this year, I did the obligatory search to see if there was a new single leading up to it. What I discovered was I somehow managed to miss 2 7"s of theirs that came out in 2010. I guess i just wasn't paying close enough attention. Gagdad was the tougher one to find. From what I read, it was primarily sold on tour, but I did manage to find an online shop in the UK that had it in stock, so I grabbed it along with a copy of More or Less.
I was quite lucky obtaining the Tallboy 7". On the artwork it says promo only, though I can't say for sure how limited/rare/hard to find it actually is. I received it as a bonus when I bought the new full length Strapped directly from Mexican Summer. I suppose I was one of the first handful of people to pick it up as I think they said only the first 50 would get a copy. These 3 keep my Soft Pack collection complete, I just need to make sure I don't miss out on anything else they release this year.

You don't see me posting much about Jawbreaker on this website as that is a collection I tackled a long time ago. At this point I'm mostly just looking for weirdo variants of the Jawbox split. This, however, is the one record of theirs that has been eluding me for ages. This was a bonus 7" that came with the LP version of the Surprise Your Pig REM tribute album. I've been keeping my eye out for it forever. I even bought once on eBay several years ago, but the seller never sent it to me.
As luck would have it, this guy popped up on Discogs and $9 later, it lives at my house. I wouldn't have minded having the entire LP & 7" set, to be honest, but I was much more concerned with making sure this 7" had a home. I don't really need the entire LP that bad, maybe if I see it on the cheap. I know there must be quite a few of them out there that had the 7" separated from the set. I found the Jawbreaker & Steel Pole Bath Tub covers online and have shared them below. No luck for the Punchline song. Sorry guys.

The Soft Pack - Strapped LP - Flamingo Edition (/300)

I first heard of The Soft Pack back when they were still called The Muslims. They had opened for The Night Marchers on a few shows and had earned the praise of some West Coast friends. I picked up their LP, and just kept on buying their records. Through the band's name change and over the course of all of the records they've put out I have enjoyed the ride, but the band never quite captured the magic of the first LP in my opinion.
The same can be said for Strapped. It's good and the great songs are really, really great. But there's some 80s sounding filler on here that's not my cup of tea. Not to mention the production and recording is definitely more noticeable than their early stripped down affairs. This is the very definition of a good record. Nothing special, nothing bad, but a perfectly serviceable record to put on when you want a change of pace.
The Flamingo Edition was only sold on the Mexican Summer website. It comes gift wrapped in flamingo wrapping paper. It's actually a really cool idea and I don't know that the picture does it justice, but I am very happy I decided to buy this direct from the label. Plus, I got a bonus 7", but that's for another post.

Sugar - Gee Angel (Live) 7"

Inspired by the recent Sugar reissues, I started looking around for the 1 Sugar 7" that has eluded me all of these years, the Gee Angel Live Promo 7". Lo and behold, I found a copy and even got it pretty cheap. $6 is nothing to take a record off the wants list. To be honest, there's nothing all that special on this 7". Good live versions of Gee Angel and Clownmaster. Not essential, but something I needed to complete the collection. Plus unlike yesterday's Jealous Sound record, at least the songs aren't the exact same version of what is on the full length. Not to mention, Gee Angel is my favorite Sugar song.
I was reading about some Sugar vinyl box set that's coming out in the UK that I believe has an exclusive 7" in it. I'm going to have to look into that. I certainly don't want to buy a box set of records just for 1 7", but I've done crazier things before...

The Jealous Sound / Daytrader - Split 7" - Tan Vinyl

This was meant to be a tour only 7" released for these 2 bands going on tour. Well, lucky for me the label then put some for sale on their website so I grabbed a copy right away. It's pretty disappointing to get the record int he mail only to discover that The Jealous Sound song is also on their full length. What's the point of this 7" even existing? For the Daytrader song? Who could care about that?
Additionally, this came shrink wrapped, and I somehow managed to screw up the top left side of the record cover when I was trying to open it. Shrink wrapping 7"s is so unnecessary. But since this 7" is also unnecessary, I guess it makes perfect sense in some way. Regardless, even though I'm annoyed I damaged the record a little bit, I'm certainly not about to go buy a 2nd copy of a record that has no purpose.

Seaweed - S/T LP - Blue Vinyl

Seaweed Friday is back, for our last week for a while I imagine. This record represents the very last Seaweed piece of vinyl that I needed. I only wish it had arrived in time for last week so there wouldn't have been a week gap between Seaweed posts. What started out by picking up a record on a lark to give the band another chance turned into rediscovering one of the great bands of the 90s that I had previously written off for reasons I sure don't understand at this point. I now have a copy of every one of the band's records. There's a couple of compilation 7"s I want to pick up and I'll probably grab a few variants here and there, but the basic core of the collection is complete, and that's a good feeling.
Musically, this is a 7" compilation, so I have the songs already. It's the early days of Seaweed when the band showed a lot of promise, but was not releasing anything close to as exciting as what they achieved on Weak and Four. Still, it is nice to listen to everything all at once on an LP. Thanks for following along while I amassed this collection. I wounder who the next band will be. Any suggestions?

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Ghetto Mom 7"

While we're on the Blues Explosion kick, I also recently picked up the Ghetto Mom 7". This is 7" #5 in the Explosion Jukebox Series. Since i had 1 through 4 and #6, it made sense that it was time to grab #5 to complete the series. I found it on Discogs for cheap and there you have it. The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Meat & Bone LP

One of my favorite records of all time is Orange by The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. When that record came out I played it to death. Hit after hit after hit. BLUES EXPLOSION! I've spent the last almost 20 years waiting for them to put out another record that good. While I wouldn't say that Meat and Bone reaches the level of Orange, it's easily the best thing that the band has done in a long, long time.
There's energy on this record. Frenzied, manic, rock & roll energy. The songs just fly by with driving percussion and great back and forth guitar play between Jon Spencer & Judah Bauer. If I had a qualm, it's that I wish the production was a bit cleaner. There's more vocal distortion than I would prefer and the recording seems a little cluttered to me. But that doesn't take too much away from the killer songs on Meat & Bone. Is this record perfect? No, but it probably the best Blues Explosion record since Orange and is certainly one of the better albums of the year. Blues Explosion!

Nude Beach - II LP

Yeah, this is the first pressing that the band released themselves, not the new reissued version on Other Music/Fat Possum, so that's nice. I've been sitting on this record for a little bit, not exactly sure what I wanted to say about it. I could throw out some of my favorite adjectives like poppy and catchy, but if you really want to boil down the essence of this band, all you really need to know is they sound just like early era Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. That's a compliment, because this record is outstanding.
It's one of those records that just feels warm and comfortable, like an old friend. I don't have the bands first record, I remember checking out a stream of it somewhere and not being too impressed, I should probably revisit. But with II, this is a band I will be looking out for going forward. It is simply a great record.

Blank Pages - Blind Faith 7" - White Vinyl (/100)

2nd single from the great Blank Pages, a band formed from the ashes of the dearly missed Idle Hands. Though there are absolutely similarities between the 2 bands, on this new single, Blank Pages take a turn to the darker side of the Wiper catalog. The A-Side is a energetic, downstroke heavy song, with something of a sinister overtone. The B-side is more upbeat, with a punchy anthem of a chorus. Though I still miss Idle Hands, the more I hear from Blank Pages, the more I eagerly await a full length record from them.

Tranzmitors - Concrete Depression 7" - Blue Vinyl (/150)

Sadly, I can't do Seaweed Friday this week. While I do have another Seaweed record on its way do me, it didn't show up in the mail in time for me to post about it today. I'll put it up next Friday, but it's a bummer to break the streak.
What isn't a bummer is thie new Tranzmitors single on La Ti Da. Like the Needles // Pins 7" I posted about, by ordering a party pack of the labels releases, I was able to secure a copy of this beauty on limited blue vinyl.
Tranzmitors are one of the top notch bands out there playing mod infused power pop and this single is another great example of the pure talent they bring to the party. Both songs are great and really are shining examples of the kind of treble heavy, throwback pop that some other bands try to pull off. Tranzmitors nail it every time, and this 7" is absolutely worth your time.

Bob Mould - Silver Age LP

As a long time fan of Bob Mould (full confession, I prefer Sugar to Husker Du, I know, blasphemy), it's been a little depressing watching his output over the last 10-15 years or so. A decent record with a few good songs here, a record with about 50% decent songs there, a terrible electronic album... It just seemed to me that he lost his fire and wouldn't ever be relevant to me again. Then he goes and puts out the Silver Age, just to make me look like an asshole.
This record rips from start to finish. It's almost like he got Sugar up and running again and magically woke up 20 years younger with the kind of energy he's put into this record. Song after song of aggressive, well thought out and exciting guitar pop music. Easily the best thing he's put out since File Under Easy Listening and one of the absolute best records of the year. In one record Bob Mould has gone from awesome guy of the past to a guy that I absolutely can't wait to see what he does next. Please keep it Mr. Mould, I am absolutely paying attention again.

Missing: I don't have their CD Tune in Tokyo in this picture and I would have to imagine that some of these records have different variants, given the past history of labels like Goldenrod & Standard Recordings, but I am unaware if they definitively exist.
I got into Radio Wendy in a way that I assume is how most people outside of the San Diego area got into Radio Wendy: They read that Radio Wendy sounded like Rocket From The Crypt. To me, that's about as strong as a selling point that you can make, it also probably didn't hurt that Radio Wendy had a split 7" with Rocket out at the time. Now, after picking up these records over the years, I can see some sonic similarities between the 2 bands, but I think Radio Wendy can more than hold their own.
This is a band that cranks out the tried and true West Coast formula of huge fat guitars, chunky guitar riffs and soaring choruses. While they are primarily concerned with being loud and in you face, Radio Wendy never sacrifices dynamics and melody. They are a band that I wish had achieved a higher level of notoriety. While I have no doubt that they are beloved in their home town, I feel that the rest of the world probably missed out on a pretty killer band.

Following quickly on the heels of their stellar full length, WWIII, Crazy is another fun pop blast of retro tuneage from one of my favorite groups of Canadians, the White Wires. The A-Side original and the B-Side Poppees cover will fit right in nicely with their last record. Chances are, if you've heard The White Wires before there won't be any surprises on this 7", just great catchy songs. If you haven't heard The White Wires, I don't know what you are waiting for , you're missing a hell of a band.

Red Dons - Auslander 7" - Blue Vinyl (/200)

The fine folks over at Dirtnap sure do have some good taste in music. It seems like whenever I find a band that I really like, they're now putting out a record on Dirtnap too. Good work. Red Dons are a band I've been listening to since their last album, Fake Meets Failure and I've been mightily impressed.
This 7" is another example of the bands downstroke heavy Wipers/Hot Snakes style of punk rock and roll. I would say that this 7" might be a bit poppier than some of the bands prior work, but in this case, that's great news. This 7" may be the best thing the band has released to date and considering the strength of their back catalog, that's no small feat. Hopefully the band will be getting a new full length together soon as this 7" has really made me excited to see where the band goes next.

Seaweed - Free Drug Zone 7" - Green Vinyl

This is really just a collection filler type of record. Neat artwork, colored vinyl and it was a promo only UK only release. So the collectability aspect is high. Music wise, it's nothing special. 1 song from Spanaway and a live version of Losing Skin. Again,, for completists only.
This may possibly be the last Seaweed Friday for a bit. I have managed to pick up most of their records at this point. There are a few things left, including a compilation 7" or 2 and some 12" versions of 7"s I already have, but I don't have any of these on order at the moment. I guess we'll see what happens between now and next Friday, but it's been a good ride so far.

And again, headhunter is mucking up the Rocket discography with more reissues on mixed color vinyl. I found a purple one a few months ago, now I've stumbled across this guy. I wouldn't mind it as much if they would at least tell you what's floating around out there. Oh well, I'll obviously keep buying them as I find them, so I'm probably part of the problem.
On a related note, Rocket From The Crypt had a 1 off reunion and recorded a new song for the kids TV show Yo Gabba Gabba. This song is being pressed as a 7" that is only available with the purchase of a Yo Gabba Gabba t-shirt at some clothing stores across the country. Sadly, there isn't anywhere by me that is stocking this, so I call on you, dear friends, to try to help me out if you have a participating retailer near you.

I actually already have several versions of this 7", but I didn't have this version with the red and orange cover. So I figured it would be good to pick it up when I found it in a distro that I was already placing an order from. Idle Hands is a sadly broken up band that specialized in high speed treble guitar power pop. They have a handful of 7" and 1 full length album, all of which are essential. There's a new band that spawned from their demise called Blank Pages. I just got a new 7" by them as well, so stay tuned...

Needles // Pins - Getting On Home 7" - Blue Vinyl (/150)

I recently received a five 7" pack of records from La-Ti-Da records that I ordered. In picking up the pack, I was able to secure the limited to 150 colored vinyl variants of them all. You'll be seeing more posts about the other 4 over the next few weeks, but I wanted to start out with the band I was most excited to hear, Needles // Pins.
This 7" is such a nice slice of power pop goodness. The A-Side is a minute and a half ripper that will make fans Statues or The Steve Adamyk Band start jumping around their living room. The B-side takes it down a notch and allows the band to stretch out a bit, yielding even better results than the A-side, if you ask me. It's a very successful one-two punch and I can only hope that the band's full length (which I pre-ordered from another label ages ago) shows up in my mailbox soon.

The Vacant Lot - Because They Can LP - Blue Vinyl

The Vacant Lot are a band that I didn't pick up on the first time around, but had I paid a little more attention, I think I would have already owned Because They Can. When I found this record on someone's Discogs list that I was already picking up another 7" from, it reminded me of something that happened many years ago, but I had totally forgotten about.
Back in the days of going to Flipside Records in Pompton Lakes, NJ, The Vacant Lot were recommended to me. Even as far as I think 2 of their records were put behind the counter for me to pick up next time I went back. But I never remembered to do that. I probably went to that store 100 more times, but just never gave it a 2nd thought. It wouldn't surprise me if those records were still behind the counter somewhere at that store.
I missed the boat as this is quite the record. Fast jangle heavy guitar with melodies & backing vocals in all the right places. They remind me of a less mod and more hopped up version of The Odd Numbers. I'm glad to have finally remembered this band 18 years later and now I have to pick up their other 2 records. Hopefully they're half as good as this one.

Seaweed - Despised 12"

It's Friday, so time for another Seaweed record. I am rapidly running out of these. I have 1 more on order, I hope it shows up before next Friday. Aside from Variants, the collection is almost complete. Despised, to me, is a bridge between the darker sound of Seaweed's first singles and the sound they would start perfecting on their album Weak.
While most of this EPs songs do still have moments where the band is reveling in a dark, sludgy vibe, the band is also starting to work in some more pop structures into their songs. To me, this band became incredible on their album Weak, and the songs they released prior to that are all just building to the moment where the band truly comes into their own.

This was a UK only Record Store Day release this year. When it came out, I was unable to secure a copy. Recently I was browsing one of my favorite UK based online stores and I noticed that they happened to have a copy of this. Now it's mine. There's nothing very exciting here, an album track and a B-side that has already been released, but I have been good about picking up all of the Sugar 7"s over the years and didn't want to add another to the wants list. I'm still looking for the Gee Angel promo only 7", if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Mega City Four is such an amazing band, and yet another that I don't think gets the credit they deserve. Active in the UK during the late 80's & early 90's, they were contemporaries of Snuff, Senseless Things & Ned's Atomic Dustbin, but they never enjoyed the same level of recognition in the US as any of these bands. They managed to weave together a punk DIY asthetic with simply astonishing tunes & melodies. The vocals of lead singer Wiz hit a register that reminds me a bit of Doug Martsch from Built To Spill, but with a rougher, more lived in quality. One of the best.
I was pretty lucky while accumulating this collection. I picked up the vast majority of these 7"s on a trip to England in 1997. it seemed every store i went to had a stash of old MC4 singles lying around. The only one that proved elusive for a while was the Mega City four / Refreshments split, but that appeared on eBay one day a few years ago and the collection was complete. You should go hunt these down too, they're just too great to not have in your collection.

Missing: Just a couple compilation 7"s, I think.
Mega City Four is such an amazing band, and yet another that I don't think gets the credit they deserve. Active in the UK during the late 80's & early 90's, they were contemporaries of Snuff, Senseless Things & Ned's Atomic Dustbin, but they never enjoyed the same level of recognition in the US as any of these bands. They managed to weave together a punk DIY asthetic with simply astonishing tunes & melodies. The vocals of lead singer Wiz hit a register that reminds me a bit of Doug Martsch from Built To Spill, but with a rougher, more lived in quality. One of the best.
I was pretty lucky while accumulating this collection. I picked up the vast majority of these 7"s on a trip to England in 1997. it seemed every store i went to had a stash of old MC4 singles lying around. The only one that proved elusive for a while was the Mega City four / Refreshments split, but that appeared on eBay one day a few years ago and the collection was complete. You should go hunt these down too, they're just too great to not have in your collection.

Love As Laughter - Timers 7"

Love As Laughter & I go way back. We go back to before there even was a Love As Laughter. We go back to the days of Sam Jayne's prior band Lync, one of those bands that I feel I can never tell people about enough. When Lync sadly disbanded, Sam started up Love as Laughter and has been cranking out records every since.
This is a self released 7" with 2 new songs. Timers is a treble guitar with galloping drum affair. It churns along with just a slight pysch hint in the vocals. The B-side is actually my favorite of the 2. It's a bit poppier and has elements that remind me of Love As Laughter's earlier material with an extended intro and outro and a bit of a breakdown in the middle.
Always happy to add another Love As Laughter record to the collection, but I'll be honest, the Love As Laughter record that I would kill to add to the collection is their first self titled demo tape. I have been searching for a copy of that since 1995 and would do just about anything to get a copy at this point. If you can be any help in tracking one down for me, please get in touch.

Dan Sartain - Now Now Now 7"

Honestly, nothing special here as both songs are also on the most recent Dan Sartain full length, Too Tough To Live. One Little Indian has a thing about releasing Dan Sartain 7"s that don't have exclusive B-sides, although a couple of the Dan Sartain full lengths never came out on vinyl, so the 7"s were the only way to get any of the songs. Dan Sartain is one of my current favorites though, so I'll still buy any record that you slap his name on.

Seaweed - Just A Smirk 7" - Yellow Vinyl

This is the 2nd Seaweed 7" and I have a similar opinion of it as I do their 1st 7". It's good, but you can tell the band was still finding their way. The hooks are still developing and the overall sound is a bit darker than it would eventually become. Pretty pleased that I managed to score a copy of yellow vinyl for cheap, from what I've seen it appears to be the rarest version of this 7". Thanks for reading another Seaweed Friday post. I'm quickly running out of Seaweed records to buy, but should be able to keep it up for a few more weeks.

Superchunk - Learned To Surf 7"

When I posted my Superchunk 7" collection picture an astute reader pointed out that I was missing the Learned To Surf 7". To be honest, I had no idea this record had even come out. I may be slipping in my old age. Regardless, I immediately purchased the record to maintain the completeness of my collection. One of my favorite songs from the band's last album backed with a great mid tempo rocker (Sunny Brixton) and a short throwaway Neon Christ cover (Bad Influence).

Crusades - Parables 7" - Clear Vinyl (/100)

I got impatient and had to buy the European version of the new Crusades 7". After putting out one of the best albums of last year I was eager to hear some more from these guys. I'm not sure I'd say I'm disappointed or anything, but I will say this 7" isn't quite as poppy as the songs on the LP were. There's definitely a darker, more metal vibe here. It totally works for the band and their lyrics, but I prefer the poppy stuff myself. This will be coming out in America on It's Alive as well, so you don't have to buy the import if you're a bit more patient than I am.

After thoroughly enjoying last year's Missing Monuments full length album, I was eager to pick up this new 7" of theirs on Hozac. As always, I was very pleased that I managed to get the limited to 200 gold vinyl edition with the alternate cover. As far as the songs go, the title track is a solid mid tempo rocker. Good harmonies and a strong chorus. The 2nd song, Bleed, is a really fast, noisy stomper, a bit of a throwaway really. However the shining moment for this 7" is the B-side Another Girl. What a great song with pick slides, chunky guitar riffs and such great vocals. The star of this 7" for sure.

Seaweed - Go Your Own Way 7" - Grey Vinyl

Welcome to another fun filled and information packed Seaweed Friday here at I Buy Way Too Many Records Dot Com. This time out, we've got a Sub Pop Single with 2 cover songs and a remixed version of the opening track from the Seaweed album four. We'll start with the remix, it's not a remix with dope beats thrown down over the song, but it's basically just a cleaned up version of the song Losing Skin. Great song, but I prefer the noisier album version. Then there's She Cracked a Jonathan Richman cover. It's OK actually, nothing bad to say about that.
But then we have Go Your Own Way. I hate this song so much. For a while at my job, I would have to call this one vendor over and over again all day long. Their hold music consisted of 3 songs. Truckin' by Grateful Dead, Mrs Robinson by Simon & Garfunkel and Go Your Own Way. I didn't like that song to begin with, but after having to listen to it over and over again everyday, I'm convinced that there's no greater torture in the world. Seaweed's version is what it is. I probably can't judge it fairly as I hate the original so much. It's another 7" to add to the collection, but probably not one I'll listen to very often.

The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I 2xLP
Barsuk (2011, Reissue)
Let's keep going with reissues this week. We'll move away from Merge and head over to Barsuk who put out this Emergency & I reissue last year. I remember how excited I was when it was announced, but then thought is was a little expensive for my tastes right at that moment. I figured I'd keep an eye out and pick a copy up when I saw it go on sale somewhere. Oops. It then proceeded to go out of print and I couldn't find a copy anywhere. That'll teach me. I'm not typically one to wait when it comes to buying records, but this cemented why I shouldn't do that.
Compared to the $80-$90 price tag I've seen this guy selling for lately, I got it for what I consider a pretty reasonable $50 on eBay. Too much to pay for a record, but it's my own fault for not buying it when it came out. I do have to say that Barsuk did an amazing job with this. The art looks great, the vinyl sounds incredible and there's no bullshit download only bonus tracks. These bonus tracks are on the actual vinyl. So my path getting to this record was flawed, but all is right in the world now that I can listen to this record on vinyl while I'm hanging out on the couch reading professional wrestling newsletters. Not sure that's what the band had in mind when they recorded this.

Sugar - Copper Blue/Beaster 2xLP

Let's stick with another Merge reissue for today. The label has reissued the Sugar back catalog and while I already had File Under Easy Listening on vinyl, Copper Blue & Beaster were only in my collection as CDs up until now. As with the Archers of Loaf reissues, Merge did a great job with the art & liner notes and it's a really snazzy package. But, also like with the Archers reissues, Merge infuriates me with more download only bonus tracks.
Now I will say, it's unnecessary and I don't need a 3rd LP full of live tracks, but there are 3 B-Sides (and 1 alternate version, but let's take that out of the equation) in the download and you can't tell me you couldn't have fit those at the end of the 6 song Beaster LP. I get that a lot of the Beaster songs are long, but I would be very surprised to learn that 3 songs wouldn't fit.
Regardless, even though File Under easy Listening was always my favorite Sugar album, I commend Merge for re-releasing these Sugar albums so I can add Copper Blue and Beaster to the vinyl collection as well.

Archers Of Loaf - White Trash Heroes LP - White Vinyl
Merge (2012, reissue)
This record sucks. It sucked in 1998, and after giving it a fresh listen, I can confirm that it, in fact, still sucks. Even the guy who wrote the reissue liner notes knows it sucks and spends half a record sleeve trying to convince you that it sucks for a reason. I couldn't tell you what the Archers were thinking when they dropped this turd back in '98, but I was not on board then and I'm still not now.
The only song on the entire record worth a lick of anything is Dead Red Eyes, and even that I would have just crammed in the middle of The Speed Of Cattle somewhere. Over the years, I have heard people say that this record was the transition record for Eric Bachmann from Archers to Crooked Fingers. He should have just made this a Crooked Fingers record, then I wouldn't have to buy it. Why did I have to buy this record you ask, especially when i still have the original vinyl from 1998? Just a sad record nerd keeping the collection complete. For everyone else, just go buy Icky Mettle instead.

Archers Of Loaf - All the Nations Airports - Clear Vinyl

When it comes to the 3rd Archers of Loaf record to be reissued by Merge, I'll start off with the same complaint that I had for the 1st 2 reissues. The bonus material should have been on a 2nd LP, not included as a download only. Not that there's anything particularly revelatory about the demos and other outtakes that make up this bonus material, but still, if you are doing a proper reissue campaign, do it right.
This is the 2nd Archers reissue that features redone artwork. A painting of the original cover. I think this is a great idea, and I wish they had thought of this when Icky Mettle came out. Musically, this is where Archers of Loaf started to lose me a bit. I only like about 1/2 of the record and even the stand out tracks like Strangled By The Stereo Wire, Vocal Shrapnel & the song All The Nations Airports, all would be lesser tracks on either of the 1st 2 Archers records.
The clear vinyl looks good, the artwork is nicely done and It's great news that the Archers Of Loaf catalog is available again, but my money will always go to Vee Vee & Icky Mettle before I move on to to any of their other albums.

Seaweed - Actions & Indications LP

Seaweed Friday! The collection is filling out, but I only have 1 more 7" on order. I need to hunt down the other ones so I can keep this up. I don't know if anyone other than me is interested in a new Seaweed record every Friday. I guess they're old hat for a lot of folks, but for me it's an exciting new record every time out.
As I was digging up more information about Seaweed I came across a common opinion; Actions & Indications isn't a very good album. Well, I've now had the chance to listen myself and I can say I have no idea what these people are talking about. Is it as good as their record four? No, but how many records are? Actions & Indications is another great Seaweed album. I suppose it's a bit less aggressive than their earliest material, but it still manages to balance a nice amount of melody and intensity. In particular the first song, Antilyrical, is as strong as anything else they ever did.
I don't get the response to this record from the masses. I think it's a great album and it makes me want to complete my Seaweed collection even more.

The Atom Age - Kill Surf City LP - Purple Vinyl (/300)

When Asian Man released The Atom Age's new LP this year, they also reissued the band's previous CD only album on vinyl as well. Kill Surf City was limited to 300 copies and was sold in a pretty cheap bundle from the Asian Man website. Though I believe the bundle is no longer available, the band is still selling these from their website.
As I mentioned Monday when i was writing about The Hottest Thing That's Cool, I feel that this band is unfairly maligned by the Rocket From The Crypt faithful. If anything, I actually think I like this album a bit more than their new release as the singer isn't quite as shouty on this one. I'll say it again, the influence is obvious, but I still enjoy putting on a high energy fun record and The Atom Age delivers that for me.

Apache Dropout - Shot Down 7" - Green Vinyl (/500)
Trouble In Mind (2012)
I was going back and forth on this 7" for a while. It's not a record that instantly jumps out at me as being great or terrible. That being said it elicits enough of a reaction in me, that I can't say it's boring or middle of the road. I think that at the end of the day, I just don't like the psych revival in garage rock as much as a lot of people seem to. The swirling scuzzy guitars and acid trip vocals just don't do it for me. If that's your thing, Apache Dropout do it better than most, but I like my rock a bit more straightforward I guess.

I think that at the end of the day, I just don't like the psych revival in garage rock as much as a lot of people seem to. The swirling scuzzy guitars and acid trip vocals just don't do it for me. If that's your thing, Apache Dropout do it better than most, but I like my rock a bit more straightforward I guess.

The Turkletons / Masked Intruder - Split 7" - Purple Vinyl (/250)
Hang Up (2012)
I picked this up as I enjoyed the last Masked Intruder 7", First Offense. I will admit that I was immediately concerned when I saw that Masked Intruder had 4 songs on 1 side of this 7", and sure enough, it's a disappointment. They're just quick little blasts. The songs kind of seem like parts to longer songs that were just recorded as throwaways. I have heard that their new full length is good (which is out on CD, but not vinyl yet, so I'm waiting on picking it up), but these songs just come off as leftovers.
I never heard of the Turkletons before, but after listening to their song about kidney stones on their side of this 7", I think it's safe to say they're not for me. Maybe if I was 20 years younger I'd think it was funny. Oh well.
